Highest Enrollment Ever at STC

Sandersville Technical College has set yet another enrollment record as Fall Quarter classes began Monday, October 5th. As of Wednesday, 1,127 students were enrolled with more to come later in the quarter as Commercial Truck Driving classes begin.

“Enrollment is already up more than 40% from this time last year,” reported new Dean of Instruction Dr. Hazel Struby. “I am thrilled to join a college with such growth and potential. Everyone at the College is working hard to assist each student so that they may learn the skills they need to work.”

If you want to see the proof for yourself, look around as you enter Sandersville Tech’s Main Campus. Cars fill every space, and on most mornings, cars are parked wherever they can find extra space – including the grass. And the growth is not limited to the Main Campus. Students fill STC’s Jefferson County Center in Louisville and STC’s Hancock County Center in Sparta as well.

Students fill every classroom – like this computer lab – this Fall Quarter at Sandersville Technical College’s Main Campus in Sandersville. Instructor Angie Yarbrough leads students on the first day during Intro to Microcomputers.

“We strive to find a place for anyone who wants to learn,” continued Struby. “We have reworked classroom assignments, combined classes, and started new sections. The need for training is real, and we are here to serve. On a campus built for 650 students, ingenuity is paramount to creating a schedule to meet everyone’s needs.”

“With this fantastic growth we need more space to serve more students in the programs we offer,” reports Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Erica Harden. “Our new Health Sciences and Business Development Center that should open late 2011 or early 2012 will have larger classrooms, new equipment, expanded computer programs for the medical field, and more labs for hands-on learning.”

The 45,000 square foot building will also allow STC to service an additional 400 credit students per quarter.

With high unemployment rates, layoffs, and economic instability, people strive to add the skills they need to get work to support their family. And Sandersville Tech is utilizing more than the traditional classroom. 158 students are taking online classes, a great option for students who have a hard time commuting or those with tight schedules.

And enrollment is not limited to adults. High school students are coming to College too through STC’s dual enrollment program where high school students earn both college and high school credits at the same time. This program has played a large part of this quarter’s high enrollment with more than 240 students from Jefferson, Putnam, Hancock, Warren, Glascock, and Washington Counties.

“In times like these, everyone wants to make the most of their time and money,” explained STC’s High School Initiatives Coordinator Shauna Andrews. “What better way to do that than with a two for one opportunity. In a time where a high school diploma is no longer enough, the high schools are emphasizing additional training and education beyond high school. When students graduate high school with a College credential and proven skills, they have a better chance of employment than the high school diploma alone.”

Sandersville Tech serves the citizens of Washington, Warren, Jefferson, Hancock, and Glascock Counties with more than 60 programs of study that offer the hands-on learning that employers want.
