Sandersville Technical College held its GED graduation ceremony on June 12th at the Franks-Thiele Auditorium in Sandersville. An overflow crowd of proud, cheering family members witnessed more than 40 men and women from Glascock, Hancock, Jefferson, Washington, and Warren counties receive their General Education Diploma (GED). In total, Sandersville Tech added 114 more deserving names to their ever-growing list of GED completions this year.

The students were inspired by keynote speaker, Lisa Eason, Assistant Commissioner of Administration for the Technical College System of Georgia. Eason, a GED recipient herself, delivered a personal story about the obstacles she overcame to earn both her GED and eventually college degree. She encouraged the students to continue their education and take advantage of the countless possibilities that now await them as GED graduates.

“Graduation is always an exciting time for us. It’s great to see our students being rewarded for their efforts,” said Saketha Adams, Executive Director of Adult Education at STC. Adams adds, “The tremendous support of the Washington County Alliance for Literacy Life Board makes this graduation a very memorable event.” The WCAL, a partner in literacy, provides ongoing GED test fee assistance and scholarships to GED recipients who enroll in postsecondary education.

To facilitate the transition of GED graduates to certificate, diploma, or degree program, STC waived the application fee for summer quarter. Students also receive a $500 HOPE Voucher for earning their GED when they enroll in an institute of higher education.

A reception for the graduates and their families was held following the ceremony.

Before the graduation, the 2009 GED graduating class at Sandersville Technical College’s Jefferson County Center had lunch at Foster’s Restaurant in Louisville. “We are proud of our students’ success and this is just one way of applauding their hard work,” said Raydor Coneway, an Adult Education Instructor at STC. Special thanks to owner Emily Fulghum, manager Debbie Boyden, and their fine staff for their hospitality.
