Elder Middle Students Investigate Career Interests at STC

Four groups from the 8 th grade at Elder Middle School recently visited Sandersville Tech to learn more about career possibilities and college through the Stay in School Grant.

While at STC, the students took part in a Career Interest Inventory. The inventory helped the students see what types of careers they might have an interest in someday.

Then, students had the opportunity to tour Sandersville Tech and see several programs in action. Instructors from the following programs briefly talked about careers available to their graduates: Construction Trades, Welding & Joining Technology, Practical Nursing, Certified Nurse Assisting, Industrial Systems Technology, and Cosmetology.

Sandersville Tech is working with the Washington County School system as part of the Stay in School (SiS) Grant. The SiS grant is designed to help 8 th, 9 th, and 10 th grade students stay in school and successfully complete high school.

During the course of the school year, all 8 th grade students from Elder Middle School will complete a 12 week course that will better equip them with knowledge about career choices and options for post-secondary education. The grant is also designed to help teachers, counselors, and graduation coaches make the transition from middle school to high school much more successful.

Mrs. Susan Binion is the graduation coach for the Elder Middle School this year and is working closely with STC’s SiS Coordinator Tess Chapman for the implementation of the stay in school grant.

For questions about the Stay in School Grant, please contact Tess Chapman at tchapman@sandersvilletech.edu or 478-553-2098.
