From the Stacks... Lights, Camera, Action!
Sandersville Tech is offering a new and exciting program, Video Production Assistant, for dual enrolled high school students beginning fall 2008. The library is already getting in books and magazines to support this program. So, for those of you whose interests are in this area, check out what this program has to offer.
The new Video Production Assistant program will include in the curriculum creating web pages, creating video and audio slide shows, creating and editing digital images including animations and working on a multimedia project which will include all these things.
So, come check out the following resources to see if this might be “your thing."
First on the list is The Technique of Film and Video Editing by Ken Dancyger. This book looks at the history, theory and practice of film and video editing and begins it journey with the silent film era. This book has a variety of still shots from classic and contemporary films and videos, and if nothing else, it is fascinating just to look at the pictures in this book.
Next on the list is a SAMS Teach Yourself book entitled, Digital Video and DVD Authoring by Jeff Sengstack. Whereas the above book, The Technique of Film and Video Editing, is more technical, this book is written in layman’s terms and has great hints for all us novice photographers on up to those aiming toward this as a profession. This book goes into lots of aspects of video and DVD authoring from choosing the right camera at the beginner’s level up to the intermediate level of DVD authoring. So, grab this book and your video camera and you are on your way to becoming a producer!
Once you have made that video, you will need to polish the finished product by editing out the bad and keeping the good. Cut by Cut: Editing your Film or Video by Gael Chandler will help you with this task. This book is also for beginners and experienced editors alike.
Your video is not complete without sound. It is the sound that adds the most value to a project. To make sure your videos are the best, check out Sound for Digital Video by Tomlinson Holman. This book will show you how to add sound for a professional quality product.
Finally, to keep current monthly, check out the journal, Sound & Vision. This month’s issue shows all sorts of exciting products including those deemed good enough to be designated as Editor’s Choice Awards.
As Chandler says in her book, Cut by Cut: Editing your Film or Video, one of the reasons to edit a film production is because “you want to see/show something different and/or are bored with the current shot.” So, for those of you who want to do something different or want a change from your current classes, call STC Instructor Selwyn May at 478-553-2085 and tell her you want to enroll in STC’s new Video Production Program.
