Joshua's Law Requires Driver's Education

A new law comes into effect January 1, 2007 – Joshua’s Law; and if you or your teenager is turning 16 after January 1 st, you need to keep reading. Joshua’s Law requires all 16 year old drivers to have 30 classroom hours of drivers education and 6 hours of “behind the wheel” time BEFORE applying for or receiving a driver’s license.

Completion of the Driver’s Education program at Sandersville Technical College meets the requirements of Joshua’s Law. The first class begins Saturday, October 28 th at the Main Campus from 8:30am until 5pm. That is the first of four consecutive Saturdays of classroom instruction to meet the 30 hour classroom requirement. Class ends November 18 th. “Behind the wheel” driving time will be scheduled during the weeks of November 27 through December 16, 2006 to complete program. Future classes will also be offered in Jefferson, Hancock and Warren Counties.

Parents’ orientation will be on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at 6pm in the Mine-Safety Annex at the Main Campus, 1189 Deepstep Road in Sandersville.  The cost of the program is $290.00 and must be paid prior to the Orientation program.  To register or for more information, call Caryl Gearig 478-553-2149 or Leigh Evans 478-553-2054.

So, if your birthday is in January, this is your last opportunity to complete the requirements locally and affordably! Completing this program has other benefits including a $150 tax credit for your income tax and auto insurance discounts. For those unable to complete the Joshua’s Law driver’s education requirement, they must wait until age 17 before getting a license.
