Local Residents Appreciative of STC
Learning More to Earn More
Local residents are making the most out of an unfortunate situation. First quarter 2007, several of our local residents were a part of a layoff at a local industry and have since decided to return to school and ‘learn more to earn more.’ Between the four students, a total of 88 years experience is shared. The years of employment range from 6 to 30 years.
Initially, returning to school after such a long period of time was not at the top of their list of favorite things to do. One student stated, “I’m not sure I want to be here. This was a choice I was given and I took it.” A few weeks later, she is one of the hardest working students in the class. Other students came in reluctantly as well. However, they have certainly acclimated to the classroom and are doing exceptionally well.
The students are taking full advantage of our Adult Literacy/Learning Support services provided by Sandersville Technical College-Jefferson County Center while preparing to enroll in other programs offered at STC. Their programs of interest are CNA, Advanced Pipe Welding and CMS. They are eager to complete their requirements to enroll in the programs.
LaVerne Heggs is simultaneously enrolled in Advanced Pipe Welding while going through Adult Literacy/Learning Support. “She has a determination like I’ve not seen in a long time. It’s refreshing to see our locals make the best of an unfortunate situation and have fun doing so! They have zeal to learn and improve themselves,” says Cassundra Huntley.
The students were amazed to learn all that STC has to offer the community and have expressed their sincere appreciation. Those apprehensive students are now encouraging others in similar situations to enroll at STC to brighten their future.
