IAge is only a number. Just ask the twenty retirees and seniors who are taking STC’s Introduction to Computers workshop. Jefferson County Adult Literacy instructor and workshop presenter Raydor Coneway can certainly attest to this fact.
“This is a great group of students who doesn’t let aging get in their way of learning; they are very eager to learn,” states Coneway. Coneway says she would encourage anyone to take time out to work with our seniors. “This class definitely dispels the myth that senior citizens are slow learners; they grasp new material really fast.”
The workshop participants came from various occupational backgrounds ranging from former bankers, teachers, nurses, and military servicemen. Student Andrew Hair, a proud 83 year old gentleman and retired Bellsouth employee says he spends most of his time in the yard and garden. He says he only use the computer to play solitaire but would like to learn how navigate the web.
This class’ main goal was to address and reduce the increasing digital divide among senior citizens. The workshop introduced the students to the computer basics, the internet, and e-mail.
