Rotarians host STC Rotaractors
by Julian Diaz, Jr.
The Sandersville Rotary Club hosted prospective Rotaractors, students of Sandersville Technical College, at the Twin City Country Club on Thursday, May 17, 2007.
Rotaract is an international program for college and university students who want to make a difference. It was founded in 1968 by Rotary International, an association of clubs made up of service-minded business and professional leaders.
The STC students attended the Sandersville Rotary Club's regular weekly meeting where they were welcomed by Brian Wright, President of the local Rotary Club. The combined students and Rotarians were presented an informational meeting commencing with Ron May, District Assistant Governor, addressing the gathered group highlightting a quote from Paul Harris, founder of Rotary International, in a message to the 1917 Convention in Atlanta... "On no occasion has the cumulative power of Rotary ever been felt. We shall strike a mightly blow some day and we thenceforth shall know ourselves." ...and today we are "knowing ourselves" in embracing STC students as an extension of the Rotary Family.
The informational meeting is the first step in the process of certification and receiving the Charter from Rotary International. Rotarian, Scott Ahrens, addressing the students provided an insight on Rotaract, its meaning and its significance. Dr. Lloyd Horadan, President of STC and a Rotary District Assistant Governor, was instrumental in student coordination for the event. The organizational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23.
Today, there are more than 7,300 Rotary club-sponsored Rotaract clubs with some 170,000 members - known as Rotaractors - in over 150 countries.
Sandersville Technical College will be added to the list of Rotaract clubs by year's end, said a Rotarian at the meeting.
